Ok so now we have some materials cut and peeled, so its time to start setting them up. The place I decided to start this structure is about three feet from the end of the existing trailer house. It's easy to get to from the driveway (dirt road) and is close enough to bring in power and water when the time is right.

Here we have the first tree up in place. This represents the back wall behind where the head of the bed will be by a few feet. This is one of the 16 supports allong the outside wall of the semi circular 26'(ish) room. This will later get tied into the cieling, the bed posts, and the uprights to either side of it with carved tree branches attached with via mortise and tenons. They will also be glued and screwed where the screw heads do not show. The top of this tree is an aproximation of the top of the cieling. Once the framing is complete, heavily starched bed sheets will be stretched and stapled over it. Then chicken wire and some rebar over that. Heavy wire strands will be tied to the chickenwire and pushed through the sheets and then tied to an inside layer of chicken wire. The inside layer will be formed to give the apearance of cave walls. Then both inside and outside layers will be concreted into the final roof / ceiling. The end result will apear to be a tree struture built into a tightly fitting cave.
As you can see, this log is standing on a piece of flat rock. These rocks are just laying everywhere here. I added tar between the log and rock to slow down and mosture absorbsion which could lead to a breakdown of the tree. I will also paint the lower 3 or 4 inches of this log with tar as well. Depending on how deep the floor is going to be. Once the structure is up, I'll come in with some gravel and level out the floor. Then I will lay down some sand and then build the forms for the floor and pour it in. The concrete floor will then encase the log ends of all the uprights. Next step...more of the same. |
